Mangalore, August 10, 2010: St. Aloysius College (autonomous) and St. Agnes College (autonomous) staged a silent procession from Jyothi Circle to the DC’s office in protest against the Mangalore University’s policy of denying admission to their students in postgraduate programmes at the university and its affiliated colleges.

Registrar (evaluation) of St. Aloysius College A. M. Narahari said in his protest speech that the Mangalore University has issued a circular to all its postgraduate departments and affiliated colleges not to admit students of colleges whose examination schemes are not on par with that of the university.

He said that this makes the students of St. Aloysius and St. Agnes Colleges, which follow different examination schemes, ineligible for postgraduate programmes offered in the university and its affiliated colleges. He urged the lecturers and students to protest against this till they get justice.

Ms Rose Veera, the lecturer of political science at St. Agnes College, said that the UGC granted St Agnes College the centre of excellence out of 200 Asian colleges; however, the university has failed to understand the concept of autonomy, which is being practiced all over the country. Accusing the university of creating impediments at every stage of the implementation of autonomy by giving lame excuses of technical difficulties, she said that efforts should be made to save the future of the students.

A memorandum was later submitted to the governor, chief minister, higher education minister, union minister for human resource development, and chairman of UGC through DC V. Ponnuraj.
