Karkala, Jan 17, 2016: The nine-day Novena as a prelude to the annual feast of the historic St. Lawrence Shrine at Attur got underway on January 17, Sunday. State Minister for Urban Development and Udupi District in-charge Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Sorake described the shrine as a great centre of harmony that promotes peace, unity and integrity in the society while propagating the messages of St. Lawrence. He also appreciated the various developmental works undertaken in the shrine under the leadership of its Director Fr. George with a view to provide better amenities to the large number of devotees who visit the shrine.
Gopal Bhandary, former MLA of Karkala who spoke as a chief guest, said a sum of Rs 15 crore was already sanctioned by the government towards the development of the shrine. Rahima, President of Karkala TMC, Lakshmi Shetty, President of Nitte Gram Panchayat, Supreeth Shetty, Zilla Panchayat Member, Richard Pinto, Vice President of Attur Shrine and several others were present on the occasion.
