Mangaluru, Aug 27, 2015:  The police have arrested a total of 13 persons in connection with the recent incident wherein a young man was stripped, tied to an electric pole and assaulted  at Attavar  on August 24. All of them have been produced before court and remanded to judicial custody till September 7.

Informing this to reporters here on August 26, Wednesday, City Police Commissioner S Murugan said all the  arrested have been lodged in the Ballari jail.

Though the SP did not divulge the names of the arrested, he said a few of them were from the Bhajrangdal and one from the VHP. He also stated that of the arrested  none had any criminal case against them except one Kishan who was an accused in a petty case.

The Commissioner also stated that the arrests were made after examining the Whatsapp, Facebook and other social media images, CCTV footages as well as information from  other sources. He even stated  tha the police are on the lookout for seven other accused  and also a few who were seen supporting the attackers.

The Commissioner also stated that  a case of murder attempt, rioting, dacoity and threat to life have been registered against the accused on the basis of an oral statement of the victim youth.

The Commissioner said the assault took place between 5.52 pm and 6.10 pm and that the police had reached the spot within ten minutes of getting to know about the incident.

Making it clear tht the police department has taken serius cognizance of this case, the Commissioner said all out efforts would be made to ensure such incidents were not repeaed. He also sought the co-oiperation of he public in the endeavour of the Police Department.

The Commissioner further said the Department cannot comment on each and every theory  that is doing the rounds regarding the incident and  assured to  find the truth behind the case while protecting the rights, privacy and dignity of the individuals involved. The statement of the girl involved in the case has been video-recorded, he said.

Though the Commissioner has not revealed the names of those arrested except one Kishan,  information available from reliable sources have  mention  the names of  the arrested as Bhujanga Shetty (26) of Bantwal, Santosh Poojary (23) of Karkala, Naveen (42) of Melinamogaru, Chandrakanth Rao (42) of Bejai. Kiran (29) , Abhiram alias Abhi (23),  Dhanush (20), Mutturaj (21(, Ghanashyam Acharya(24), Praveen Shetty (29). Vivek (38) and Kiran Kumar (25) from Attavar.

Of the accused Vivek is said to the treasurer of Hindu Yuva Sene, while Chandrakanth Rao is a VHP activist and Naveen, Kishan, Dhanush, Kiran, Santosh nad Bhujanga are Bhajrangdal activists.

Only when the police are harsh in such situation, they can have control on the cheap behavior of locals. With the fear of being arrested no one comes forward to play a part in communal riots.
