Arecanut import price hiked with immediate effect – Ramanath Rai

Mangalore, Sep 2, 2012 : Ramanath Rai, president of the District Congress, announced at a press meet held at the office of the District Congress on September 1, Saturday that the central government has hiked the import price of arecanut from Rs. 35 to Rs. 75 with immediate effect.

Further, he said that the rate of arecanut has been hiked by 108% in a bid to support arecanut farmers, adding that the central government has protected the interests of farmers.

Besides, the Gorak Singh Committee has designed a nation-wide welfare scheme for arecanut growers and the committee’s report is now in the observatory stage with the central government, which will implement many more schemes for the benefit of arecanut growers based on this report.

Mr. Rai also said that he will urge the central government to establish the National Areca Council to ensure continuous profits for arecanut farmers.

Congress leaders Moideen Bawa, Ivan D’Souza, Suresh Ballal, P. V. Mohan, T. K. Sudhir, and Mithun Rai were also present.
