Mangalore, Oct  15: Speaking at a seminar on anti cow slaughter bill organized by Samudaya Mangalooru, an affiliate of CPI (M) at Kandaya Bhavan in Mangalore on Oct 15, Friday, Dr. G. Bhaskar Mayya, professor of Vijaya College Mulky, said that Hindu scriptures contain evidences that the Hindus of ancient India were beef eaters.

Further explaining the matter, he said that certain Hindus believe that it is against their religion to have non-vegetarian food, but they are not aware that Hindu scriptures permit people to eat beef and other meat. He added that the scriptures mention great saints and sages eating meat, including beef.

An expert in Indian religious scriptures, Dr. Mayya further said that the Jain and the Buddhist societies were also non vegetarian for several centuries in spite of the fact that their religions gave importance to non violence. Stating that a number of Hindus in India and abroad eat beef, he said that if the anti cow slaughter bill is passed in Karnataka, a number of people of all religions, including Hindus, will suffer.

Simultaneously, he criticized uncivilized protests against the bill. Urging people to protest against the bill in a civilized manner, he said that eating beef in public places is not a good way to protest and will only lead to negative results.

President of Samudaya Mangalooru Prof. Narendra Nayak presided over the programme. Vasudeva Uchila delivered the introductory address. K. Yadava Shetty, the secretary of DK District Committee of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, was one of the prominent people present.
