Advani’s yatra will not go to Bangalore

Mangalore Today News Network

advani ratha yatra oct 23Mangalore, October 23, 2011: L. K. Advani’s anti-corruption yatra will not enter Bangalore on October 30 obviously to avoid the embarrassment of holding an anti-corruption movement when many of the BJP’s top leaders, including B. S. Yeddyurappa, the former chief minister of Karnataka, in jail on various counts of corrupt activities.

Sources in the BJP said that Advani had expressed his difficulty in urging the people to strive for a corruption-free government in Bangalore when Yeddyurappa, Katta Subramanya Naidu, and Krishnaiah Shetty are under judicial custody in Parappana Agrahara, a short distance from National College Grounds, where Advani’s public meeting was to be held.

In New Delhi, the BJP said that Yeddyurappa’s arrest will not have any effect on Advani’s anti-graft yatra. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the BJP spokesman in Delhi, refused to comment on queries of BJP’s support for Yeddy. However, he said that it was the Congress, and not the BJP, which was spreading the anti-corruption message among the public.

Advani had expressed embarrassment over the arrest of BJP leaders over land scams, especially since Yeddyurappa’s arrest is being widely used by opposition parties to criticize his anti-corruption.

Advani might have decided to skip Bangalore because an FIR will be filed against Home Minister R. Ashoka for alleged denotification of land, especially when Ashoka was scheduled to share the dais with Advani on Oct 30.

The BJP high command has been quite embarrassed with all the criminal proceedings against top BJP leaders in Karnataka. Besides Yeddyurappa, Katta Subrahmanya Naidu, and Krishnaiah Shetty, former minister Janardhana Reddy is in Chenchalguda Jail, Hyderabad, booked for illegal mining. A case against Murgesh Nirani, charging him with illegal notification of land for personal gains, has been filed in a Lokayukta Court.

Advani’s yatra will now pass through Udupi, DK, and Uttara Kannada. It will enter Karnataka through Kasargod in Kerala on Oct 30 and will then cover Mangalore, Mulky, Hejamady, Udupi, Kundapura, Baindur, Bhatkal, Honnavar, and Kumta.

Regarding the arrests, CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda had stated in New Delhi that the cases against its top leaders might be an embarrassment for the party, but not for the government. Breaking the RSS silence on the Yeddyurappa case, Dattatreya Hosabale, the joint general secretary of the RSS, stated that it is a great embarrassment for the RSS because senior RSS leaders had advised him as a Swayamsevak and that the RSS cannot be blamed if Yeddy had not listened to them.
