AI disburses interim compensation to 146 plane crash victims: Sunil Kishan

Mangalore, June 10, 2010: Air India (AI) has given away a total compensation of Rs 13.06 crore to 149 families of the victims of the Mangalore plane crash of May 22, said Executive Director of South India Range Sunil Kishan at a press conference held at Ocean Pearl on June 10, Thursday. He clarified that this includes the prime minister’s compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the survivors of the crash. 

 

He said that compensation is yet to be given to two families owing to lack of proper documents, and added that PRO of AI A. V. George will provide a solution to the problem by this evening. 

AI’s compensation distribution programme was held in 3 phases from May 28. The relief amount was given away in the presence of a team of lawyers from Mulla and Mulla of Mumbai, who helped the bereaved families to receive the compensation as per the correct procedures. 

The matter regarding the fake passport was cleared up, said Mr. Kishan, explaining that the problem cropped up because of the presence of two people with the same name. The airport authorities had fed the name of the victim along with the passport number of the survivor, he said. 

Mr. Kishan also said that a team of experts will identify valuables belonging to the victims. These valuables, which are currently being held by AI, will soon be handed over to the families of the victims. However, the valuables found on the bodies of the victims will be very difficult to identify, he admitted.
