Mangalore, Jul 19: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest near Besant College, demanding the immediate banning of Students’ Federation of India (SFI) as well as Popular Front of India (PFI), on July 19, Monday. Over 25 ABVP activists shouted anti-PFI and anti-SFI slogans for nearly a quarter of an hour and even blocked the road for a brief period.

The ABVP protest follows the incidents in which unidentified persons chopped the palm of T. J. Joseph, a Malayalam professor, for preparing a question paper in which he had allegedly insulted Prophet Mohammed. A group of SFI activists also allegedly assaulted ABVP member Unnikrishnan, who later died in hospital.

District Convener of ABVP Purushottam gave a speech condemning these incidents and labeled them examples of the rising terrorism and naxalism in Kerala.

Vinay Jadhav, a local ABVP leader, said that organizations such as SFI and PFI should be banned in order to prevent such criminal activities. ABVP member Harsha said that the organization will intensify its protests if the authorities ignored its demands.
