Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 25, 2014: ’A Friend in need is a friend indeed’! This is today a forgotten story perhaps in the human world. For we see that very few people extend and share human feelings to those around. But, recent episode proves that in the animal kingdom very unusual friendships are not rare as many stories seen tell us.

A touching story of unusual attachment between an ox and a stray dog at Attavar is  heart warming. For many years according to local observers, a  dog called ‘Shambu’ and the ox were often found strolling together. Much to the amazement of the people the duo was very close to each other. People state,  Shambu used to watch over the ox when it slept and went to sleep only after the ox woke up.

Sadly,  on August 24, tragedy struck, the ox died in Jain Compound here.  The death of ox was tragic, but  more sad was to see the heartbroken Shambu, who watched over the dead ox and didn’t allow any one to come near.  It was only after large number of people started gathering near the ox, Shambu stood away. The locals then buried the ox in a pit. Later when people had gone away,  Shambu came and sat near the spot with a mournful posture and is still at the same spot without food or water.
