Mangalore, May 2 : The day bright and clear, a solemn festive mood surrounding Rosario Cathedral in the heart of Mangalore city, 26 excited couples, with their kith and kin and many well wishers from the community have gathered to be united in wedlock after a lot of thought and preparation. The theme of the celebration organized to the last detail by every member of the Saint Vincent De Paul Society of Rosario Cathedral Mangalore is "Marriage a Gift of GOD, the shape of Love". The presiding minister Rev.Dr.Aloysius P D’Souza assited by eight priests conducts the religious rights. The Chief Guests Smt & Sri. Alwyn Patrao, Lions District Governor.
The couples and well wishers followed by the religious ministers entered the cathedral to the joyful music and bells at 10 am sharp and commenced the nuptial mass. The Bishop in his instruction said, "Marriage is a sacrament; it unites the couple, not just two but along with Christ has three together. Instituted by God as per His will who is the author of humanity. He created the first couple and placed them in Paradise. Adam and Eve were the beginning of the human race.God has ordained that every human must live productively in joy". After the instruction, the couples exchanged vows administered by the minister and watched by the individual witnesses. They kept in hand the rings and mangalasuthras (KAREMANI) made sacred by the blessing of the church and wore them as an external sign of the married state to forever to Love,respect and honour in good times and bad. The church and the whole area was well decorated and filled to capacity.
After the church ceremony, the couples were seated on a lit up dais under a huge shamiana in the Rosario School grounds, with the VIPs and key people of SVP and so on. Their kith and kin were seated below the stage. The presiding dignitaries spoke briefly and exhorted the couples to live a good Christian married life of service and dignity of family life. The were asked to contribute to a good example for others to follow in the years to come.There after all present were treated to a sumptuous wedding lunch which made the whole atmosphere a memorable one.
This is the 36th year that SVP is conducting mass marriage of underprivileged. The couples hailed from the city and surroundings with two grooms from Mumbai. The number of couples in these 36 occasions has now crossed 500 couples. Each couple was supported with clothing, house hold effects, basic ornaments and a fixed deposit with conditions for Rs.4000/= which helps them to start a saving scheme and consolidate for the future. There was a gathering to capacity and all admired the efforts and committed their own contribution for the present and future. Much support is needed to keep these good works for the upliftment of women and downtrodden on a better footing in the times ahead. All that is good deserves emulation. JOY is everlasting!
