2 jewellery shops burgled at Siddakatte; valuables worth over Rs 40 lakhs looted

Bantwal, Aug 23, 2013 : In another case of serial thefts, this time in  Siddakatte, thieves who broken open two jewellery stores on the Bantwal-Moodbidri state highway have decamped with jewellery worth Rs 42.22 lakh in the wee hours of August 22, Thursday.

It is learnt, thieves first  drilled a hole in the back wall of Navarang Wine Shop to enter the shop but could not find anything valuable there. They then entered Swarnaprabha Jewellers at Vishwajyothi Complex owned by Prabhaker Acharya.  They broke the shutter using a gas cutter and even the locker and decamped with   gold and silver items worth Rs 10 lakhs. The stolen valuables include 130 grams of gold and 15 kg of silver and some diamond jewellery.

They then entered Dhanalakshmi Jewellers which was located opposite the road and  robbed jewels worth Rs 32.22 lakh. It is learnt they even threatened Prabhaker, security guard of a nearby ATM with lethal weapons even as he rushed to the  shop.The stolen goods include 35 kg of silver and 370 grams gold ornaments.

The security guard then passed on the information to the  police and the owners of the shops.

The security guard revealed that there were at least seven to eight thieves and they fled in a vehicle.

Hundreds of people gathered at the spot as news spread. The thefts have caused panic in the area. Investigations are underway.
