Another drive was flagged off in front of the Derebail Church Hall by Rev Austin Paris and Belgian citizen Anna Cardinal. Augustine Almed joined the Abhiyan in the costume of ’Mahatma Gandhi’.

Cleanliness is the foundation stone for practical good according to Mahatma Gandhi. Hence, all need  should give importance to cleanliness. The opportunity to all the volunteers to do their bit for the nation is exemplary. If we can feel that this is no less significant than the service to God, then shramadan will be meaningful and more valued.

Rev Austin Paris said at Derebail that cleanliness is symbolic of holiness. It signifies the presence of God. It is easy to declare and initiate any project, but carrying it out in a sustained manner with dedication is extremely difficult. The efforts of Ramakrishna Mission in this regard are laudable. Each household should segregate its waste and if every household can initiate wet waste composting by managing its own wet waste, then this effort becomes more meaningful.

After the shramadan was flagged off in front of Capitanio School, the volunteers formed six teams and, starting from Pumpwell, identified six black spots prone to littering by the public. All these spots — at Padil Junction; opposite Fortune Apartments; near Nagori Amar Alva Bus Stand; on the road leading to Maroli Sooryanarayana Temple; opposite Capitanio School and near Pumpwell circle — were cleared of garbage and dirt. They were levelled and decorative flower plants were placed to dissuade the public from littering further.

Social activist Sowraj and others removed unauthorised hoardings and banners at Kankanady, Capitanio, Maroli, Pumpwell and nearby areas.  Heaps of garbage lying near Derebail Church were removed.

The Swacch Sena Team of Nitte Physiotherapy College cleaned the spot around a bus shelter near Kuntikana Flyover. The Christian brothers of Derebail Church cleaned the road dividers.

The fourth team of volunteers carried out the cleanliness drive at Konchady area. NSS students of Besant Evening College also took part in the Abhiyan.
