’CCTV camera mandatory in public places’

Mangaluru, May 18, 2019: Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil on the sidelines of the weekly phone-in programme at his office on May 17, Friday, said   that given the area of Mangaluru city, there is a need for 2,000 to 3,000 CCTV cameras. The establishments and buildings, which don’t have CCTV cameras, will be given notices. If they fail to install CCTV Cameras even after our notice, then a fine of Rs 5,000 will be slapped on them. 

 

As a result of bombings in Sri Lanka and New Zealand, police are implementing Karnataka Public Safety Act which requires every establishment with a footfall of 500 or above to install a minimum of two CCTV cameras.

The Police chief pointed out, “There are about 950 CCTV cameras in the city, apart from 200 cameras installed by the police. The police have been instructed to conduct a survey and ensure that every establishment had cameras and metal detectors for their doors,”

Masks for  police : The traffic police, who work amid dust and pollution, will get respiratory masks.

Patil said that 1,500 respiratory masks will be distributed to the traffic personnel deployed across the city. Symbolically, he handed over the masks to some traffic police personnel on the occasion.

During the phone-in programme, the police commissioner received a majority of traffic-related complaints.  These issues ranged from minor riding two-wheelers to non-functioning of street lights.

The residents appealed to the police commissioner to install barriers and traffic cones in areas, such as Yeyyadi and Mannagudda. Absence of reflectors and cat-eye and unattended telephone cables lying on footpaths were highlighted.

A resident informed the commissioner about the inconvenience being faced by the public due to the lack of a bus stop at Haleyangady Junction. Students struggle to board a bus to commute to schools and colleges. Addressing the lack of street light facilities at many locations, Patil promised to bring it to the notice of the concerned department.

Two cases on illegal substance consumption, such as ganja and other synthetic drugs in Baikampady and Sutarpete, were reported by a resident. Another citizen objected to the usage of plastic bottles at the phone-in programme. There were complaints that the bus stops removed for road works are not restored and city buses stop as per their will and pleasure - this is cause for serious problems.
