Mangaluru, August 19, 2015: Inaugurating a three-day workshop on ’Tulu wikipedia’ organized jointly by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Sri Ramakrishna Degree and Pre-University College, Dr U B Pavanaja, Regional Manager, Centre for Internet Society (Bengaluru) stated that Tulu wikipedia, launched in 2007 is still in incubator. The wikipedia needs at least 10 to 15 people to work on it regularly adding at least five new articles to the wikipedia every month.
He went on to say, an attempt is being made to develop a wikipedia from the past eight years. Six workshops were held since January 2015, last year, the number of articles in the wikipedia also increased from 135 to 900.
People should come forward to work for at least two hours a day. A meeting should be convened every month, may be online, to ensure that the work is on. If we meet all these requirements, we can submit a proposal to make the wikipedia active in six months.
Wikipedia is available in 290 languages of the country including twenty languages of India. The Kannada wikipedia was launched in 2003 and there are 46 lakh articles in English wikipedia,
Sri Ramakrishna Educational Institution Convener B Krishnaprasad Rai said, compared to the population the number of Tulu speaking people is decreasing rapidly. He felt Kannada, English and other languages have affected Tulu and a very few have realised it and trying their best to save the language. Collective effort is needed to develop the wikipedia.
Sri Ramakrishna Degree College Principal Dr Naveen Shetty K said ’Tulukoota’ of the college is giving training on Tulu language for students. Two-month training was also conducted for students in the college on Tulu script. More than 30 lecturers and students took part on the first day of a three-day workshop.
St Aloysius College Assistant Professor Dr Vishwanath Badikana, Sri Ramakrishna PU College Principal Dr Kishor Kumarkumar Rai Sheni, Sri Ramakrishna Degree College BCA Department Head Shwetha H Parodi, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy Member Roopakala Alva were present among others.
