Udupi, Aug 30,2017: Three persons including a child were injured in Shiribeedu after a speeding bus rammed into an auto rickshaw in which they were travelling.
Arathi (42) and her daughter Sunaina (10) were returning by auto rickshaw from a visit to Adarsh hospital when the accident took place.
It is learnt that when they reached Shiribeedu, a private bus operator, believed to be a Durgamba Motors express bus, plying from Udupi to Kundapur, rammed into the auto rickshaw from behind. The impact of the accident was such that the auto rickshaw overturned, causing grievous injuries to Arathi and Sunaina. The auto driver, identified as Sandeep, also sustained injuries.
As soon as the accident occured, locals and passersby rushed to help the victims, and shifted them to a nearby hospital.
The bus driver claimed that his vehicle had a brake fail, but the people said that on inspection of the bus, the brake did not appear to have any defect.
The locals said that the accident occurred because the bus was being driven at high speeds on the narrow, one-way road. With rains lashing the coastal area, asphalt lifting off in chunks due to the water and heavy traffic and reckless bus operators vying for customers, this stretch of road is one of the deadliest in the district.
Following the accident, traffic on this stretch of road was affected for sometime.
A case has been registered.
