"The news of my coming to India is baseless and totally false," said Naik, who faces a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

"I have no plans to come to India till I [feel] safe from unfair prosecution. God willing, when I feel that the Indian government will be just and fair, I will surely return to my homeland."

YC Modi, the director general of the NIA, told IndiaToday.in that reports of Naik’s return were untrue.

Zakir Naik’s NGO, the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), was declared illegal in 2016. The ED is probing allegations of money laundering to the tune of more than Rs 18 crore.

As well, Bangladesh cited Naik’s sermons on a television channel as a reason for an attack in Dhaka, in which 22 people were killed.

The offences registered against Naik are under section 153 (a) of the Indian Penal Code for promoting enmity among different religions  and under sections 10, 13 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act -- for being a member of an unlawful association, abetting an unlawful activity and criminal conspiracy.

On June 20, the Bombay High Court refused to grant Naik relief, observing that he didn’t show any interest or desire to help investigating agencies.
