Youth Congress workers suspended for public slaughter of calf

Mangalore Today News Network

Thiruvananthapuram, DH News, May 29 2017: Amid outrage over the public slaughtering of a calf by Indian Youth Congress (IYC) activists in Kannur, the state Congress on Monday suspended three IYC leaders who organised the event.

The calf was slaughtered as part of a protest against the Centre’s new curbs on the sale of cattle for slaughter.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president M M Hassan said Rijil Makkutty, Kannur Lok Sabha constituency president of the IYC, was suspended for organising a protest which went against the “culture” of the Congress party.

“The party had sought an explanation regarding the incident, from the Kannur District Congress Committee. The Youth Congress will follow its own plan of action on the matter,” Hassan told reporters here. The IYC suspended Makkutty along with two other activists who were involved in the slaughter protest – Josey Kandathil and Sharafuddin.

The incident had led to stray voices of dissent from within the Congress but action against the IYC activists is learnt to have been initiated following the BJP’s campaign against the slaughtering at the national stage and the Congress central leadership’s open condemnation of the incident. “What happened in Kerala yesterday is thoughtless, barbaric & completely unacceptable to me & the Congress Party. I strongly condemn the incident,” Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi tweeted on Sunday.

The incident which happened on Saturday was captured on video and the footage was shared by BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan on his social media pages. The IYC activists raised calls of protest against the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi before a butcher slaughtered the calf and distributed its meat to people who had assembled at the protest venue. “Cruelty at its peak. Cattle slaughtering by Kerala Youth Congress leader in broad daylight, in front of the public gathering,” Rajasekharan posted along with the video.

The Congress-led opposition United Democratic Front observed ‘black day’ protests on Monday against the new restrictions. On June 1, the Congress will organise a protest near the Raj Bhavan in connection with the curbs.

Hassan said the Congress would seek a special Assembly session to explore possibilities of new laws to counter the curbs.
