Varanasi, Sep 03, 2014: Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed its displeasure with the Centre’s affidavit on a road map to clean Ganga and asked it to clean the river in a stage-wise manner so that the apex court could monitor it.

"Will Ganga be cleaned in this century or not?" the apex court asked, asking the Centre to file another affidavit in three weeks.

"Please try that the next generation is able to see the river in its original form. We don’t know about our lives," the Supreme Court bench observed.

The Supreme Court asked for a power-point presentation from the Centre, detailing its stage-wise plans with priorities of each stage in its Ganga clean-up plans.

"The kind of affidavit that the government has submitted, it will take 200 more years to clean the river. It is a bureaucratic document. We want to understand your proposal on cleaning the river in layman’s language," the apex court said.

Appearing on behalf of the Centre, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said the river, which crosses 16 important cities, is so polluted at some locations that it is impossible to even take a dip in it.

Last month, the Supreme Court pulled up the BJP government for its failure in coming up with a plan to clean Ganga. "Are you saving the Holy River" it had then asked.
