Vyapam Scam: MP - CM, Shivraj Singh Chouhan Asks for CBI Inquiry

Mangalore Today News Network

Bhopal, July 07, 2015:  Faced with the strongest demand for his removal in nearly 10 years as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan today called for the CBI to investigate a scam that has besieged his government.

shivraj"The government must be above suspicion," said Mr Chouhan, who won the last of his three consecutive terms in 2013. He asked the Madhya Pradesh High Court to reassign the inquiry of what is known as the Vyapam scam from the state police to the CBI. That request, made by the Congress, has in the past been rejected by the court, which is supervising the investigation. Indeed, till as recently as yesterday, Mr Chouhan had maintained that a CBI probe was unnecessary.

But the sudden death on Saturday of a journalist reporting on the Vyapam scam led to a national takeover of what had largely been a state-level controversy pivoted on a corrupt system that saw imposters being allowed to take qualifying exams for government colleges and jobs by candidates who bribed politicians and bureaucrats. Akshay Singh was conducting an interview in Jhabua when he began frothing at the mouth. Hours later, he was dead, No 35 in a gory aggregate of people who were accused in, questioned about or linked to the scam, and have died since 2012.

The outrage over the journalist’s death allowed the Congress, which has had no joy in Madhya Pradesh for over a decade, to recover some of its mojo as an opposition party. Its Digvijaya Singh - former Chief Minister of the state - is among four people whose appeal for a CBI inquiry will be heard on Thursday by the Supreme Court. BJP sources in Madhya Pradesh say Mr Chouhan’s change of heart was motivated, at least in part, by a desire to prevent the ignominy of the top court ordering the CBI to take over the case.
