Visibility of two moons on August 27 - a hoax

Mangalore Today News Network

Bangalore, Aug 26, 2014:  Are you waiting to witness a celestial wonder soon, be fooled no further. A message doing the rounds on social media speaks of two moons being visible on August 27.

moons However, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium officials have described the message as hoax.

’The whole world is waiting for it. On this day, Mars will be very bright and, like Moon, everyone can see it with naked eyes. This day it will be 34.65 million miles away from Earth. On this day don’t forget to see it at 12.30 in the night, as you get to see two moons in the sky.

This event will happen again in 2287", reads the message that seems to have caught people’s fancy. Pramod Galgali, joint director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium said people shouldn’t fall for such messages.

"There’ll be no such celestial wonder on August 27. It’s Saturn and Mars coming adjacent to each other.

It surely is a nice sight but for a layman it’ll look like another star. Amateur astronomers might be able to make out the difference," he said, adding that favourable weather conditions might make it possible even for Bangaloreans to witness this event through the night. The two-moon hoax is played every August-end, said the officials. So, you now know the story.
