Ahmedabad,Aug 16, 2017 : Rebel Congress leader and former chief minister of the state Shankarsinh Vaghela on Wednesday put in his papers as legislator of Kapadvanj constituency in Gujarat Assembly.

Vaghela submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the Assembly, Ramanlal Vora in Gandhinagar in the presence of chief minister Vijay Rupani, his deputy Nitin Patel and senior ministers Bhupendrasinh Chudasama and Pradeepsinh Jadeja.

Vaghela’s resignation comes after seven legislators loyal to him had put in their papers earlier this month after Rajya Sabha polls, following six other Congress legislators who had quit the party late last month before Rajya Sabha polls in the state. In all 14 of the 57, Congress legislators in Gujarat Assembly have now put in their papers. Congress on its part had expelled these 14 from the party for six years.

Vaghela had failed to stop Congress candidate Ahmed Patel from reaching the Upper House of Parliament, despite him breaking away from the party, thus bringing down the effective strength of Congress in the Gujarat Assembly from 57 to 43. Ahmed Patel made it to Rajya Sabha along with BJP national president Amit Shah and Union minister Smriti Irani.

Vaghela, who was Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly before he quit the Congress on July 21, had first openly spoken against Congress and its national leadership when he had held a meet with 1500 of his supporters in Gandhinagar.

Vaghela has been claiming that Congress high-command has not been heeding to his request to prepare for a fight in the forthcoming Assembly polls to be held by the end of this year.

Vaghela has on July 21 said that while he was quitting Congress, he would quit as legislator post-Rajya Sabha polls and August 15.

“When such a senior leader is resigning, it is natural that we remain present with him on such a day,” Vijay Rupani said.

Vaghela was seen relaxed and all smiles whilst submitting his resignation to Vora. He was seen chatting with the chief minister and his deputy in the chamber of Vora.

The presence of the chief minister and senior ministers with Vaghela gave rise to speculation that he could make a comeback to his mother party Bharatiya Janata Party which he had quit in the mid-1990s after having split it then.

Though Vaghela has been claiming that he would not be joining any political party after having quit Congress.

“I have made my stand clear. Neither am I joining any existing political party or any new party. I am definitely in politics but shall not be joining any political party,” Vaghela told reporters after submitting his resignation. “I don’t need anyone’s blessings other than that of people.”
