Toddler dies after falling into a pot of boiling SugarNew Delhi, July 31, 2014 (Dailymail): In an incident highlighting the menace of e- rickshaws, a two-and-a-half year old boy died after falling from his mother’s arms into a pot of boiling sugar syrup outside a sweet shop when she was hit by a speeding battery-operated three-wheeler in Trilokpuri area of East Delhi.  Hours after the incident, Dev succumbed to his burn injuries on July 29 night at the Safdurjung Hospital. His mother Pinky is recuperating from burn injuries on her right hand which she sustained while trying to rescue the boy.

After somehow managing to regain balance, the woman tried to save her son and suffered burns on her right hand. "I started screaming for help, but no one came forward... Later, a passerby came forward and took us to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital from where Dev was referred to the Safdarjung Hospital," she added.

Taking advantage of the commotion, the driver managed to flee from the spot. He, however, left the e- rickshaw behind. The child succumbed to his burns injuries at the hospital after two hours. A case has been registered at the Mayur Vihar police station.

Police teams have been formed to nab the absconding culprit.  The police have started questioning local e- rickshaw drivers, but the investigators are facing problems in identifying the owner of the e- rickshaw as it was not registered with the city governments transport department.   "If the police had acted swiftly after the incident, they could have traced the accused and nabbed him. But it did not happened as the police reached the spot much later after the incident...," Pinky claimed.  Initial probe found that the sweet shop owner had kept the pot on the roadside. The police are now consulting their legal department whether action came be taken against the sweet shop owner for encroachment. The incident highlights the out of control traffic in the Capital.

The Delhi Highcourt has asked the Government to ban e-rickshaws  hearing a PIL on the subject on July 31
