Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, Nov 9: Congress president Sonia Gandhi for the first time today reacted to Team Anna’s campaign on the Lokpal bill issue.

In a written speech read out by Congress leader Satpal Maharaj at the public rally in Uttarakhand, Sonia Gandhi said, mere speeches will not end corruption.

"When the Prime Minister has himself promised to bring the Lokpal bill, they why is there so much hullabaloo?, she asked.

Sonia Gandhi reminded that it was she who had taken the initiative to make the Right To Information Act a reality.

Sonia Gandhi could not attend the rally due to fever, and sent her written speech to be read out.

This was supposed to be Sonia’s first public rally  after she underwent surgery abroad.

“The Congress President is suffering from fever. Her visit to Uttarakhand has been cancelled,” AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi told PTI.

Besides addressing the rally, Gandhi was also expected to lay the foundation stone for the much-delayed Rishikesh-Karanprayag rail project at Gauchar in Chamoli district.

Gandhi addressing the rally was expected to be a virtual launch of the party’s campaign for the upcoming assembly election in the state.

The UPA Chairperson had undergone surgery abroad in August for an undisclosed ailment.
