Seer Raghaveshwara Bharati Swami gets court relief in sexual harassment case

Mangalore Today News Network

Bangalore, Sep 10, 2014: In a major relief to Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt pontiff Raghaveshwara Bharati Swami, the Karnataka High Court has directed the state police not to arrest him until further orders. He has been accused of sexually harassing a well-known singer.

sexual harrassJustice K.N. Phaneendra issued a directive after the seer had moved the HC challenging the criminal case registered against him by the state police. The case was registered after the victim’s daughter had filed a complaint against Raghaveshwara seeking police action. The seer’s counsel contended that the complaint was "false". "Efforts are being made to tarnish the image of the mutt and the seer. High-handed persons are making attempts to ensure that the seer does not complete his Chaturmasa rituals, which began on July 12 and ends on September 9," he alleged.

The seer’s counsel also sought a stay on the criminal proceedings against the religious leader. However, the state public prosecutor argued that the police had already questioned the victim, who gave a statement that the seer had been sexually harassing her since 2010. The government is keen on pursuing the matter as per law.

Anshumathi Shastry - daughter of popular singer Premalatha Divakar - in her complaint to the police had alleged that her mother was sexually harassed by the seer on several occasions. She has invoked IPC Sections 354-A (sexual harassment) and 506 (Criminal Intimidation) against the seer.
