Sabarimala row: Must obey SC order, says Siddaramaiah

Mangalore Today News Network

Oct 19, 2018: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday backed the Supreme Court order allowing entry of women into the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in Kerala.

Sabarimala“On the issue of women entering the Sabarimala temple, every person who has accepted the Constitution must bow down to the Supreme Court order,” Siddaramaiah tweeted Friday, even as protests continued at Sabarimala for the third consecutive day after the Lord Ayyappa temple opened for ‘Thulam Puja’.

Siddaramaiah’s stand is in stark contrast to the one the Kerala Congress has taken. The party, along with the BJP, is protesting the Kerala government’s decision to implement the Supreme Court order allowing women of menstruating age to enter the temple.

Siddaramaiah currently heads the Congress-JD(S) coalition coordination committee in Karnataka. The head of the coalition, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, had earlier declined to comment on the Apex court allowing entry of women at the Sabarimala shrine. He, however, had said: “The SC order is on one side. But there are some practices that have been followed from a very long time. These are practices based on what people believe in. I don’t want to create a controversy over what people believe in.”
