Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, April 18, 2015, DHNS: I n a scene straight out of the movies, a 25-year-old electrical contractor from Chennai was chased down after he drove his SUV recklessly, damaging more than a dozen vehicles and injuring two traffic constables in Koramangala and Madiwala on Friday afternoon.

driver. After chasing him for over 8 km, the police and public intercepted his car and caught him near Maharaja Hotel junction at Koramangala 4th block.

He was identified as Vinod Kumar, a resident of T Nagar in Chennai. The police also recovered some pills from him.

Vinod left Chennai on Friday morning to visit his friend on Bannerghatta main road in his Honda City car (TN 01 S 3886). Around 1 pm, he rammed into a car near UCO Bank, off Forum Mall junction.

The traffic constable on the spot tried to stop Vinod, but he sped away, ramming into a couple of autorickshaws and two-wheelers in the process.

Even as other traffic constables were alerted through wireless sets, Vinod steered towards Madiwala check-post.

Constable Thimmaraju signalled Vinod to stop, but he brushed past him and a couple of cars, and went towards St John’s Medical College. Policemen once again tried to stop him, but he dodged them by driving on the pavements and turned the vehicle towards Krupanidhi college.

By this time, the public had joined more than seven traffic cops in the hot pursuit. Vinod, however, was in no mood to give up. He entered the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company guesthouse premises at Koramangala 2nd block, but realised that there was no exit and drove back to the main gate. He sped towards Maharaja Hotel junction, where he was finally intercepted.

As soon as his car was cornered by the police and public, he got down and flashed a knife. But he was overpowered and beaten up by the public. The traffic cops took him into custody and handed him over to the Koramangala police station. During interrogation, Vinod said he came to the City to meet his friend. Questioned about the pills found in his trouser pocket, he said he was under medication as he was unwell.

The police are trying to ascertain what kind of pills he was carrying and why he had kept the knife in the car. “He will be subjected to a medical examination to find out if he was under the influence of alcohol or drug,” police said.

Thimmaraju and Shivanna Gowda Patil, constables attached to Adugodi traffic police station, suffered minor injuries and were treated. An assault case has been registered in Koramangala police station.
