Rane loses in Maharashtra, Hooda wins in Haryana

Mumbai, Oct 19: Maharashtra appeared headed for an alliance government, with trends available in all 288 constituencies indicating that no party will be in a position to form the government on its own, although the BJP, riding on the Modi wave, emerged as the leader of the pack.

A s per trends available at 10.45 am, the BJP was leading in 110 constituencies, with former - and according to some, would-be - ally Shiv Sena a distant second in 57 seats. The ruling combine of the Congress and the NCP were at 47 and 45 respectively.

 

The Raj Thackeray-led MNS had a dismal outing, leading in seven seats, down from the 13 seats it won in the 2009 polls.

With no party appearing to be in a position to reach the magic figure of 145 seats needed to form the government, the state looks set to witness a plethora of permutations and combinations in the next few days.

While there is already speculation of former allies BJP and Sena coming together and forming the next government, there are also those who feel that the Sena’s and Congress and NCP’s need to remain in power, may throw up combinations which may not seem plausible now.

The first result declared so far has gone in favour of Madhuri Misal of BJP, who retained her Assembly seat in Pune.

Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is trailing behind former minister Vilaskaka Undalkar in south Karad, while former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is leading in Baramati in western Maharashtra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also campaigner par-excellence who addressed over 50 rallies ahead of elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, is set to lead the BJP to history on what is going to be a Super Sunday for the saffron party.

While the party is set to form its government in Haryana, a massive turnaround from just four seats in 2009, it is way ahead of its rivals in a free-for-all Maharashtra by leading in nearly 125 seats, not far from the magic figure of 145.

Has the BJP created history in Haryana?

The BJP, which fought the Haryana battle for the first time on its own, was leading over its rivals Indian National Lok Dal and Congress. At 10.45 am, the BJP was leading in 48 seats in the 90-member Assembly, followed by the INLD (21) and the Congress on 13.

The trends are a massive turnaround for the BJP which won just four seats in 2009. The party’s Anil Vij, who won from the Ambala Cantt assembly seat, became the first winner in the Haryana elections. Rohita Revri of the party won from Panipat.

The outgoing Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is leading in Garhi Sampla Kiloi, while Kiran Choudhary is trailing at Tosham.

Haryana Minister Mahender Partap Singh of Congress is trailing behind Seema Trikha of BJP from Badhkal seat while another Minister Geeta Bhukkal is leading over her nearest rival Sadu Ram of INLD.

The INLD nominee Pardeep Chaudhary is leading over Latika Sharma of BJP.

Haryana had created history by clocking an all-time high polling of about 76.54 per cent, surpassing maximum of 72.65 per cent in 1967 in the high-stakes battle.

During the 2009 Assembly elections, the Congress had won 40 seats, the INLD 31, the BJP four, HJC-BL six, the SAD and the BSP one each and independents seven.
