Rahul Gandhi at Sharad Yadav’s meet: Modi govt wants Swachh Bharat, we want Sach Bharat

New Delhi, Aug 17, 2017 : Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, while attending a meeting organised by JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav’s Sajha Virasat Bachao Sammelan, launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Narendra Modi government.

"There are two ways of looking at the nation. Some says this country belongs to them. Some say they belong to this country. This is the difference between us (Congress) and RSS," ANI quoted Rahul as saying.

"RSS tells you that you do not belong to this country. Dalits were beaten up in Gujarat and then, they said that you do not belong to this country," ANI futher quoted him as saying.

"It is because RSS knows that it cannot win elections with its ideology that it is appointing its own people to every institution," he also said. "The policy of ’one man, one vote’ is enshrined in the Constitution. RSS wants to destroy what is enshrined in the Constitution. It wants to change it."

He further said that the death of farmers in the country had no effect on the government because Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in the Lok Sabha, had said that loan waiver was not a policy of the government.

"Modiji talked of ’Make in India’. But you see ’Made in China’ wherever you look. The truth is that ’Make in India’ has failed," said the Congress vice-president. He also alleged that the prime minister frequently lied and then called for Opposition parties to unite to fight the Modi government.

"When asked about jobs, Modi government said it provided jobs to one lakh people last year. They promised two crore jobs, but could provide only one lakh jobs. And out of those one lakh jobs, around 30,000 were provided by the Karnataka government," Gandhi said.

"Wo kehte hain humme Swachch Bharat chahiye. Hum kehte hain humme Sach Bharat chahiye (They say they want Swachh Bharat, we say want Sach Bharat)," he said.

Top leaders of the Congress, the Left parties, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Trinamool Congress and other Opposition parties had been invited to Yadav’s programme which is being seen as JD(U) leader’s show of strength against his party chief Nitish Kumar’s decision to ally with the BJP.

Asked who would attend the meeting, Yadav had told reporters, "There would be hardly anybody from the opposition who will not come."

Asserting that the "composite culture" was the soul of the Constitution, which Yadav alleged was being "tinkered with", he had said similar meetings would be held across the country.

While refusing to answer questions on his disapproval of Nitish’s alliance with the BJP, the former JD(U) chief had said the decision to hold Thursday’s event was taken weeks ago, when his party was a part of the Mahagathbandhan.

"The Sajha Virasat Bachao Sammelan (save composite culture programme) is not against anybody but in the interest of the country. This is in the interest of 125 crore people of the country," he had said.

He had also cited incidents such as the suicide of Rohith Vemula and the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, besides suicides of farmers across the country, to suggest that the situation was tough for underprivileged people.
