Punjab Minister Rakhra calls victim’s death ’God’s will’, sparks controversy

Chandigarh, May 02, 2015: Days after a 13-year-old girl died after being molested and thrown off a moving bus, Punjab Education Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra triggered a controversy after he said that the death of the victim was God’s will.

“Death of the victim was God’s will,” he said.

"We can always meet with an accident. We will do more for the people....What has happened is unfortunate. You cannot go against nature’s will," he was quoted by PTI.

The bus is reportedly belongs to Orbit Aviation, owned by Punjab’s ruling Badal family.

Punjab Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed his ’’deepest sorrow and anguish’ over the incident and assured of strict punishment to the guilty.

Meanwhile, the family of the victim has refused to cremate her demanding that an FIR be lodged against the Punjab’s ruling Badal family, owners of Orbit Aviation, and the permit of the bus should be cancelled..

The body of girl has been kept in a mortuary at Singhawala village.

They have also rejected a compensation of Rs 20 lakh and a government job offered to the victim’s mother, who was also molested and thrown off the moving bus, free treatment and holding trial of the case in a fast track court.

“Ministers of Akali Dal-BJP Govt are giving out insensitive statements, it’s completely inhuman,” Surjewala told ANI.

He added that Rakhra’s statement reflects the arrogance of power has surpassed the basic principles of humanity.

Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took out a protest march today against Punjab CM and his son protesting against the incident.

The victim and her mother had boarded the bus to visit a gurudwara when the incident took place.

The 13-year-old victim and her mother were thrown off the moving bus by a group of men, including the conductor, after they resisted molestation attempts.

According to the victim’s mother, no one came forward to help and even the bus driver refused to stop the bus despite her repeated pleas.
