Puducherry Assembly also passes anti-CAA reslution

Puducherry, Feb 12, 2020; A resolution opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 was passed in Puducherry Assembly on Wednesday. With this, Puducherry became sixth assembly to adopt anti-CAA resolution after West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Puducherry"Resolution urging the Centre to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act has been passed in Puducherry Legislative Assembly," Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said.

The resolution was passed as the MLAs of AIADMK and All India NR Congress boycotted the proceedings of the House and did not come to the assembly.

The legislators had already presented a petition to the Speaker VP Sivakolundhu on February 6, requesting him not to permit any discussion ora resolution against CAA "as it exceeds the powers of the Legislative Assembly under Government of Union Territories Act 1963".

Kiran Bedi, Governor of Puducherry, had shot off a letter to CM V Narayanasamy two days ago, saying the Act passed by Parliament is applicable to the union territory and "cannot be questioned or deliberated in any manner."
