Petrol and Diesel rates to be hiked owing to cleaner fuel

March 31: Petrol and diesel prices will go up by Rs 0.50 per litre and Rs.0.26 per litre respectively from tonight in thirteen India cities on account of shifting to a cleaner fuel, which will meet environment standards.


 
These cities include Kolkata, Chennai, Bangaluru, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Surat, Pune, Kanpur, Agra, Sholapur, Mumbai and Delhi.
 
Cleaner Euro-IV grade fuel will be supplied in these cities from tomorrow, a government official stated today. It is going to be a tough time for common people as these fuels (petrol and LPG) are the basic necessities in urban areas and there is a lot of hue and cry over this issue amongst people.
 
According to some sources, Oil companies had invested Rs 40,000 crore for the distillation of fuel in order to produce cleaner fuel and the prices have been increased to make up for the cost. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was approached by the the Petroleum Ministry for clearance, gave an approval on this price hike issue.
 
 
This will be the third hike in diesel rates for Delhi in less than a month and the second for petrol.
 
Lately, petrol prices were raised by Rs 2.71 per litre and diesel by Rs 2. 55 per litre from February 27 as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee hiked excise and customs duties on these two fuels. Also,diesel rates went up by Rs 2.37 on March 23 when the Delhi government raised VAT on the fuel.

The cost of Euro-III petrol will get hiked by Rs 0.26 per litre and same grade diesel by Rs 0.21 per litre thus adding to the total cost.
