Mangalore Today News Network

West Bengal, Sep 03, 2015:  Students seeking admission to the Raiganj University in West Bengal and parents who had accompanied them, ran in panic today when some people stormed the campus with guns and bombs.

Policemen stationed at the campus allegedly stood by helplessly for some time before giving chase to the attackers.

Students said the attackers, allegedly associated with the Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad, the students’ wing of Bengal’s ruling party, had clashed with members of the Congress’s student wing, the Chatra Parishad, which runs the union at the university in North Dinajpur district.

The admission process came to a halt as the candidates scattered. A police complaint has been filed but no one has been arrested.

There were also reports of trouble today at a school in Manikchak in Malda district, where some people, allegedly associated with the Trinamool, attacked a school that was closed during a strike called by trade unions yesterday.

The headmaster was allegedly manhandled and classrooms were vandalised.

During the bandh on Wednesday, clashes between Trinamool supporters and those of the Opposition Left were reported from a number of places in the state as the ruling party attempted to ensure that the strike failed.

The Left has claimed that the bandh was a resounding success in Bengal; it has also alleged police excesses against party workers.

But West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said workers recorded a higher attendance at work yesterday than they usually do.
