Pakistan chopper spotted close to LoC

Mangalore Today News Network

Srinagar, Feb 21, 2018 : A Mi-17 Pakistani helicopter on Wednesday flew close to India’s disputed border with the neighbouring countries, raising concerns in the security establishment.

The Pakistan chopper came within 300 mt of the Line of Control in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir between 9.45 and 10 am, but went back after a few minutes, army sources said here.

The sources indicated that the matter will be taken up with the Pakistani side.

Meanwhile, sources in Jammu said that three helicopters were seen in the area and only one was spotted within the 300m distance from the LoC.

The helicopters were spotted opposite Khari Karmara sector, they said.

There was no firing or hostile action by any side.

According to the norms agreed upon by the two nations, no rotary wing aircraft are to come not within 1 km of the Line of Control.

The limit expands to 10 km for fixed-wing aircraft.

Sources said it was not an airspace violation, but a breach of an understanding between the two sides.

Such flying in close proximity to the border by Pakistan and Chinese aircraft are not new.

It is a regular phenomenon near the border even though they generally don’t escalate to a military conflict between the neighbours as there are established mechanisms to deal with such events.

Since 2016, the LoC was military active with regular ceasefire violations from either sides, leading to death of men from the Army and paramilitary forces, and civilians.
