PM launches Jan Dhan Yojana to provide bank accounts to all

New Delhi, Aug 28, 2014: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Jan Dhan Yojana, a mega financial inclusion plan under which bank accounts and RuPay debit cards with inbuilt insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to crores of persons with no access to formal banking facilities.

Modi By launching the scheme PM told there is need to end financial untouchability for poverty alleviation. "Never in the history of insurance industry 1.5 cr people provided accidental insurance in a day;record 1.5 cr accounts opened today’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced here at National Capital.

The Prime Minister has sent 7.25 lakh emails to bank officers already informing them about the financial inclusion scheme PMJDY, which he had announced in his Independence Day address to the nation.

The scheme seeks to provide two accounts to 7.5 crore identified households by August 2018.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana to be carried out on mission mode and 7.5 crore people to be covered by Jan Dhan Yojana by January 25, 2015: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told at the function.
