The Congress president wrote on Twitter that his father and former PM, Rajiv Gandhi, “lived and died” for the country and no fictional series can change that.

“BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right... My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that,” he said.

A petition was filed in the Delhi high court on Wednesday seeking the removal of certain content from Sacred Games, a web series by over-the-top media services provider Netflix, on the grounds of insulting former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

A day before, a Congress activist in West Bengal had also filed a police complaint against actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Netflix and the makers of Sacred Games for allegedly “insulting and abusing” Rajiv Gandhi.

The series is based on author Vikram Chandra’s novel of the same name. It has been directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane.
