Muzaffarnagar tense after blast inside mosque

Lucknow, July 1, 2015: Already tense following the murder of a youth in village Bhumma under Meerapur police station of Muzaffarnagar, a blast in a mosque in the same area in western Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday night has led to communal tension in the district.

Mohammad Muneer, the imam (man who leads prayers) of the mosque, has sustained injuries. He told the police that two bombs were hurled at him from outside the mosque. There were half a dozen men in the mosque when the incident took place.

However, some eyewitnesses were quoted as saying to the police that the bomb was kept there in the mosque. That it could be the handiwork of a hooligan was a larger possibility because the police have recovered a third crude live bomb from the mosque.
 
It was only on Monday night that one Satveer Kashyap was shot dead in the same area. Some people had alleged that the killers had run away for their shelter towards the same mosque. While there were some policemen deployed there at the time of the incident to maintain law and order in the month of Ramzan, they had escaped from there soon after the murder of Kashyap.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Muzaffarnagar, KB Singh, told Mail Today, "The police force has been deployed at several places in the district to maintain peace. The policemen who were posted there on Monday night including SHO Mohammad Shoyeb and two constables have already been suspended for dereliction of duty. A probe is going on in last night’s incident and the culprits would be nabbed soon."

Since the 2013 communal riots in which nearly 70 people were killed and thousands displaced, Muzaffarnagar has remained on the edge with frequent reports of social tension.
