New Delhi, Sept 19: All cases pertaining to the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar that were pending in the Allahabad High Court have been transferred to the Supreme Court. The Central government on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it will not trample on the UP government’s powers on maintaining law and order.

The apex court has asked the state government to file a compliance report on the assistance that has been provided to the riot victims within a week.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav met Governor BL Joshi in Lucknow to brief him about the situation in the riot-hit area.

Under the Akhilesh Yadav government riots have taken place not just in Muzaffarnagar but across the state in the past 12 months.

In a blow to the state government, UP ADGP (Law and Order) Arun Kumar who is investigating the Muzaffarnagar riots, on Wednesday sought a transfer from the state, citing political interference.

Though arrest warrants were issued last week against several UP politicians, no arrests have been made so far. The politicians against whom cases are registered include BJP MLA Sangeet Som, BJP MLA Bhartentu Singh, Bharatiya Kisan Union leaders Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait, BSP MP Kadir Rana, BSP MLA Noor Saleen Rana, BSP MLA Jameel Ahmed, Congress leader Saidujama and 16 other people.

BJP leader Uma Bharti on Wednesday had dared the government to arrest BJP leaders and be prepared to deal with the fallout in case the arrests are made.
