Family members of the woman have alleged that her husband and in-laws had been harassing her and suspect them to be behind her murder. Her father-in-law is an assistant police inspector posted at a police station in South Mumbai.

Investigating officer Shekhar Waghale said the body was found near a compound wall on the road between the NRI Complex and the Delhi Public School in Nerul. The post-mortem report said death occurred at least 24 hours before the body was spotted, and that a rope had been used to strangulate her. The police have registered the statement of Savita’s family members, including her sister and brother-in-law.

Vijendra Patil, a relative, said Savita, who was from Hingoli, had a love marriage in March 2012. She had been since living in her husband’s Worli residence along with her in-laws. Her husband is a mechanical engineer. After graduation in science, she completed her BEd following which she started working as a teacher in a Mira Road school. The couple had a son two years ago.

Based on the allegations levelled by her family members, the police also called Savita’s husband and in-laws for questioning. Waghale said no arrests had been made in the case and interrogation of the suspects was on.
