The Bandra Government Railway Police (GRP) are trying to find out if there was any foul play in the incident. The incident occurred around 9 pm on Tuesday, when Jeremy Fernandes (25) and Niyanta Mirjankar (22) were on their way home from work. While Fernandes’ house is in Charni Road, Mirjankar lives in Bandra.

Both were travelling in a first-class compartment and allegedly fell out of a running train between Khar and Santacruz. After being found near the railway tracks, they were taken to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, where Fernandes was declared dead on admission while Mirjankar was admitted. Fernandes’ body was later taken to Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem.

His father is with the Air Force and is based in Hyderabad. He came to the city yesterday and took his son’s body for the last rites. According to an official from the hospital, Mirjankar was later moved to Holy Family Hospital on request of her family. She is in the intensive critical care unit (ICCU) of the hospital.

Kiran Mirjankar, Niyanta’s father, said they had no clue about the incident or how it occurred. “She was on her way back from work. We got to know about it from the GRP officials. She is still in the ICCU and we hope for her speedy recovery,” he said. Doctors at the hospital told mid-day that Niyanta has suffered severe head and chest injuries.

“The patient has suffered multiple rib fractures and a severe injury at the back of her head. As of now she is under observation,” said the doctor. Cops suspect there may be more to the incident. “The trains are empty during the time they were going home.

The exact scenario will come to light when Mirjankar regains consciousness. She is currently under observation at Holy Family Hospital,” said a police officer. The Bandra GRP have recorded statements of families of the duo; they told cops they knew nothing about the duo except that they were colleagues.

Police also said nobody who saw the duo fall came forward to report it to the cops. Police have registered an accidental death report in the incident.
