According to hospital sources, he passed away at 6.54 am due to cardio respiratory arrest.

Dr BK Mishra, consultant neurosurgeon at Hinduja hospital, said, “At 6 am he suffered from breathless. The entire team tried to resuscitate him through CPR. The attempts continued for an hour but he could not be revived.”

Sawant was put on ventilator support soon after his condition worsened. Doctors, however, said that his medical parameters suddenly dropped low and he was doing medically fine in the past few days.

Sawant had been in coma since 2006 after he sustained severe trauma injuries during the train blasts. He had partially come out of coma three years ago but his condition had relapsed, said MP Kirit Somaiya, who has visited the victim over the last nine years.

Sawant was brought to Hinduja hospital on July 12, 2006, which has since then been his home. On July 11, soon after the blasts, he was rushed to Bhakti Vedanta Hospital, Mira Road, and later brought to Hinduja in a deep coma state. “For two years he remained in deep coma. Though he then came into a semi comatose condition, the condition has remained the same ever since,” a hospital source said.

Sawant underwent multiple surgeries of brain since 2006 and was given physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions to improve his condition.

His final rites will now be carried out at his residence in Bhayander on Wednesday at 1 pm.

He is survived by his father Jayprakash Sawant, mother Madhuri, wife Priti and daughter Prachiti. The family was informed about his demise early morning following his father left theirBhayander home to reach Hinduja hospital. Sawant’s body will be taken home by 2 pm today.
