"I have learnt that they are under constant fear. But there is nothing to worry," he said, adding the state government would provide "whatever help is required (to Vidwath and his family)".

Vidwath was allegedly assaulted by Mohammed Haris Nalapad, the son of Congress legislator N A Haris, at Farzi Café in the upscale UB City on February 17. The 24-year-old MBA graduate is still in the ICU of Mallya Hospital.

Reddy said security would also be provided to M S Shyamsundar, the special public prosecutor in the case who has sought police protection. Shyamsundar had claimed that he had overheard a supporter of Nalapad’s saying he (the lawyer) would be their "next target".

Police have also accepted requests from Vidwath’s family to invoke specific IPC sections in the case, the minister said.

Asked about Nalapad staring at and sizing up Shyamsundar in the courtroom on February 21, Reddy said he wasn’t present at the hearing and that he learnt about it only from the media.

"What he did was wrong. But there is no need to worry as he (Nalapad) will not be spared," he added.
