Meira Kumar to be Opposition’s Presidential candidiate

New Delhi,  June 22, 2017 : Seventeen Opposition parties on Thursday chose former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as their joint candidate against NDA choice Ram Nath Kovind.

The decision was announced by Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the presence of leaders like Sharad Pawar, Lalu Prasad and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"17 Opposition parties have together decided to jointly field Meira Kumar," Gandhi told reporters.

"We do hope other Opposition parties join us," she said, a day after JDU broke ranks with the Opposition to support Kovind.

Sources said the names of Balachandra Mungerkar and Sushil Kumar Shinde were raised by Sharad Pawar. He also told the meeting that hebis not averse to Meira Kumar.

However, all others suggested Meira Kunar’s name.
