Iranian hand suspected in blast outside Israel embassy in Delhi, letter says it’s a ‘trailer’

New Delhi, Jan 30, 2021:     An Iranian hand is suspected behind the minor IED blast that took place on Friday outside the Israeli embassy in New Delhi. Sources say the letter recovered from the site of blast mentions the explosion as a “trailer”.

 

The letter also mentions Iran’s General Qasem Soleimani and Iran’s top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh as martyrs. Both were assassinated last year.

Qasem Soleimani was killed near Baghdad International Airport in an airstrike ordered by then US President Donald Trump on January 3, 2020. General Qasem Soleimani was seen as most powerful military commander of Iran.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Iran’s top nuclear scientist was assassinated on November 27, 2020. He was killed in Tehran using a satellite-controlled machine-gun. Iran has blamed Israel for the attacks on its top leaders.

The low-intensity blast near the Israel embassy in Delhi on Friday evening did not lead to any major damages. Window panes of three cars were broken in the impact of the blast, however, no injuries were reported.

“A very low-intensity improvised device went off at 5.05 pm near 5 APJ Abdul Kalam Road. Initial impressions suggest a mischievous attempt to create a sensation,” said the Delhi Police.

The explosive was kept between the pavement and bushes when it went off, sources said.

The blast took place when President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were present a few kilometres away at the Beating Retreat ceremony at the culmination of the Republic Day celebrations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi and assured him of "fullest protection" to diplomats and the mission.
