Indian origin man killed by bear in US

Mangalore Today News Network

New York, Sep 30, 2014: A 22-year-old man of Indian origin, Darsh Patel, was reportedly killed by a black bear at the Apshawa Preserve, near New York City, on Sunday.

bearPatel had been hiking in the reserve on Sunday morning with four friends when they were set upon by a 300-pound male bear.

West Milford police chief Timothy Storbeck said that the five friends noticed the bear beginning to follow them and ran and in the process split up.

Unfortunately for Patel, the bear caught up with him and killed him. When his four friends couldn’t find him anywhere they called the police who found his body about two hours later with the bear still circling it.

The police officers tried to scare it away by making loud noises and throwing sticks and stones, but the bear wouldn’t leave. Finally, the police had to kill the bear in order to retrieve Patel’s body.

Police say that the bear was probably looking for food since there is a current shortage of the acorns and berries that bears eat.

Patel was a senior information technology and informatics major at Rutgers University.
