Mangalore Today News Network

Vishakapatnam, Aug 23, 2014: India’s first indigenous stealth Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette ’INS Kamorta’ was inducted into the Indian Navy on Saturday by defence minister Arun Jaitley.

INS Kamrat The Ship, which is first in a series of four planned corvettes, was commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Vishakapatnam on Saturday Morning.

"I am sure INS Kamorta will serve this country effectively for a very long time," Jaitley said in his speech.

"In recent months, amongst the various initiatives that the government has undertaken is indigenous manufacturing of our defence deployment," he added.

INS Kamorta is the first Indian Navy ship to be built with carbon fiber reinforced plastic and was  designed by Indian Navy’s in-house organisation, Directorate of Naval Design (DND).

It will carry short-range Surface-to-Air missiles (SAM) and Active Towed Array Decoy System (ATDS). It can also carry an integral anti-subamrine warfare helicopter.
