Indebted man stakes wife to raise loan for IPL betting

Lucknow, May 29, DHNS: The woman has lodged a complaint with the police, who are investigating the matter.

To make up for losses he suffered in the share market, a man in Kanpur staked his wife to raise a loan to bet on IPL matches.

 

The man, identified as Ravindra Lal, however, lost his bets on the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches as well and fled from his home leaving his wife at the mercy of private money lenders, who were ’’harassing’’ the woman and ’’pressuring’’ her to go with them.

The woman has lodged a complaint with the police, who are investigating the matter.

According to sources Lal, a resident of Govind Nagar in Kanpur, about 90 km from here, owned a mobile phone accessory shop. He, however, had taken loans from private lenders for betting and investing in the share market.

Sources said that Lal had suffered heavy losses in the share market. His wife Kuljeet Kaur (name changed) started a boutique at her home to earn money to meet day-to-day expenses.

Lal’s wife said she had raised money to pay off the creditors after he assured her he would not bet again or invest in the stock market.

He, however, continued taking loans and this time, he staked his wife to get a loan from private lenders and started betting on IPL matches. He fled his home after his lost the bets and the creditors started pressuring him to pay the debts, sources said.

’’The creditors would often come home and harass me.....they asked me to either pay the loan or go with them,’’ Kuljeet, who has a child, said.

The harassed wife narrated her plight to some local social workers, who took her to the Govind Nagar police station.
