Heavy rains continued to wreak havoc in Kerala

Kerala, Jul 17, 2018 : The districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha are reported to have received the most rainfall on Sunday.

 

A report by Times of India (TOI) states that many low-lying areas in Kochi city were flooded as a result of heavy rains, making it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles, especially two-wheelers to move through inundated roads.

The Kochi district administration has opened flood relief camps at Chellanam and Vypeen, where around 100 houses were reported to have been submerged in water.

Many major roads in Kochi including South Railway Station road, Seaport-Airport Road, MG road, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry were flooded.

The district Disaster Management Authority has directed control rooms be opened at Kanayannoor, Aluva, Kothamangalam, Kochi, Paravur and Muvattupuzha.

The district of Alappuzha was also severely hit by rains on Sunday.

According to a report by The New Indian Express (TNIE), parts of Alappuzha district recorded a rainfall of more than 50 mm on Sunday.

The reports state that the water levels at Kuttanad has risen by 3 ft and that heavy rains in the hilly districts of Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta have also created problems for the people of Kuttanad.

Many roads including the Alappuzha-Changanassery state highway were flooded leading to heavy traffic and inconvenience to the commuters.

In the district of Kottayam, the rains were accompanied by strong winds leading to many trees being uprooted and falling on the roads.

According to TNIE, Sajimon T Joseph, assistant station officer of Kottayam Fire station said that they received around 20 calls over the past two days regarding the uprooted trees.

He is reported to have said that, “Many trees in and around Kottayam town fell on the roads causing severe traffic blocks. There was power through the night as electricity lines snapped in many areas of the city.

With heavy rains being predicted in the state till Tuesday, seven districts have declared holiday for all educational institutions on Monday.

The holidays were declared on Sunday by the respective district collectors, taking into consideration, the heavy rainfall.
