Eid relief for tense Saharanpur, curfew relaxed

Mangalore Today News Network

Lucknow, July 29, 2014:  Eid festivities will not be same this year in Saharanpur city. Fear lurks in the heart of the people after the clashes between Sikhs and Muslims on Saturday that claimed three lives and left more than 30 injured.

Eid reliefDespite assurance from the administration that the situation is under control, Muslims did not come out of their homes in many parts of the city for Eid shopping. The situation was better in suburban and rural areas of Saharanpur district where the community flocked to local markets ahead of the Eid celebrations on Tuesday.

While isolated incidents of stone pelting were reported from some parts of the district on Monday, the administration claimed that the situation was limping back to normal after the Saturday’s clashes.

But illegal firearms have turned out to be a headache for the police as initial investigation indicated that

the weapons used during the riots were manufactured in underground arm factories flourishing in Saharanpur district. "The weapons used during the clashes were illegal. Such weapons are easily made here in rural areas. We will soon start an extensive search to nab those who actively used firearms to vitiate the situation," Inspector General of Meerut zone, Alok Sharma said.

Curfew was lifted in the new city area from 10 am to 2 pm and in the old city from 3 pm to 7 pm for the people to buy their daily essentials. In the main city areas, the people mostly preferred to stay indoors.

ADG, Law and Order, Mukul Goel said the police was keeping vigil on the situation with the help of drones. "We were facing problem is keeping vigil in congested areas. There are narrow lanes and by-lanes. So we deployed drones to keep a watch in those areas with the help of camera fitted flying objects," he said. Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik has said that he was closely watching the developments in Saharanpur. "It is my job to keep close watch on such kind of incidents in the state. I am keeping myself updated on this issue," he said.

Minority Affairs Minister Azam Khan, meanwhile, has alleged that the conspiracy to instigate violence in Saharanpur was hatched in Nagpur, where the RSS headquarters is located. " It was planned in Nagpur to push Saharanpur into communal violence.

This is a plan of the BJP and its related organisations to polarise the voters in the assembly bypolls," Azam alleged.
