Cyclone Amphan landfall on May 20; could be extremely severe: NDRF

New Delhi, May 18, 2020:The chief of National Disaster Management Authority, S N Pradhan on Monday, 18 May warned about the threats due to ’super cyclone’ Amphan.

"When ’Amphan’ makes landfall on 20 May, morning or noon, it will be an extremely severe cyclonic storm", he said.

Hours after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the severity of Cyclone Amphan on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) & National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) officials to review the situation arising out of it in different parts of the country.

Home Minister Amit Shah was also part of the meeting. After the meeting, the PM assured support from the central government and said, "I pray for everyone’s safety."

The government also said that Cyclone ’Amphan’ will cause heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal.

Extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan over the west and central parts of Bay of Bengal intensified into a super cyclone with wind speed above 200 kmph (kilometres per hour) on Monday afternoon, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). Heavy rainfall is expected to hit coastal Odisha by Monday evening and then hit West Bengal’s coast the following day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had on Sunday issued a cyclone alert for West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts after Cyclone Amphan intensified over the Bay of Bengal.

‘Fully Prepared to Deal With Any Situation’: Odisha Special Relief Commissioner

Odisha Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena said on Monday that the cyclone may turn into a super cyclone between Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

"“(This) means that winds will blow at the speed of around 230 kmph in the sea. It’ll make landfall between Digha and Hathiya island as a very severe cyclone on 20 May.”" - Odisha Special Relief Commissioner PK Jena, as quoted by ANI

"We expect widespread rains in coastal Odisha tomorrow (Tuesday). On 20 May, there could be heavy to very heavy rainfall in northern districts of Odisha, with wind speed reaching up to 110 kmph in certain parts of Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur," Jena reportedly said, adding that they are fully prepared to deal with any situation.

"We have moved rapid response teams, fire teams, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to the districts which can be affected by Amphan," he was further quoted by ANI as saying.

Fishermen Advised Not to Venture Out

The IMD issued a rainfall warning for the next four days. Fishermen were advised not to venture into south Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, into central Bay of Bengal during 17-18 May and into north Bay of Bengal during 18-20 May 2020, ANI had reported.
