Chandrasekhar, presently an Independent member of the Rajya Sabha is originally from Kerala, has been fielded by the BJP for the polls scheduled for March 23. The Congress, on the other hand, is beating the Kannada pride drum as all three of its nominees are Kannadigas. "The BJP has repeatedly nominated and elected non-Kannadigas as Rajya Sabha representatives from Karnataka, the latest being Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Can they really represent Karnataka’s best interests in Parliament? Aren’t there any people from Karnataka for BJP to choose from?" the Congress asked, in a social media campaign called ’Namage Mosa - BJP Cheats Karnataka.’

Chandresekhar’s nomination figures on top of a list of 10 points the Congress hurled against the BJP in a charge sheet. The charge sheet also includes failure of the prime minister to intervene in the Mahadayi issue, shifting of CRPF centre from Taralu to Uttar Pradesh, BJP leaders’ criticism of Karnataka flag, etc.

BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa defended Chandrasekhar’s nomination. "He has lived in Karnataka for many years now. He is a Kannadiga. He has fought in favour of many pro-Kannada movements," he told reporters after Chandrasekhar filed his nomination papers.

"Chandrasekhar has spent 12 years in politics and has responded to the issues of Bengaluru such as protection of lakes, opposing steel bridge and so on," Yeddyurappa said.
